In the Sequence of the Hexagrams: 'Things cannot be brought to a final end; hence it is received with Before Completion, which concludes the sequence.'
After Completion represents the culmination of things; if things reached an end without transforming, there would be no principle of unending life. The Changes means transforming and renewing without end.
Therefore, After Completion is followed by Before Completion to conclude the work. Before Completion means not yet exhausted; not yet exhausted holds the meaning of ceaseless generation and renewal.
As a hexagram, Li is above and Kan is below; fire is above water, not serving each other's use, so it is Before Completion.
In a time of Before Completion, there is the principle of success, and the hexagram's talents moreover possess the way to bring about success; it all depends on cautious action. A fox can cross water, but if its tail is soaked, it cannot finish the crossing.
Old foxes are full of doubt and fear, so they tread the ice and listen, fearing they may fall through. Young ones are not yet able to fear and take caution, so they are reckless in crossing.
'Qi' should be 'yi' (resolute, bold), describing strength and bravery; the Book of Documents says: 'Resolute, brave men.' If a little fox is headstrong in crossing, it wets its tail and fails to cross.
In a time of Before Completion, the way to seek completion requires utmost caution to attain success. If one is as impetuous as a little fox, one cannot complete the crossing. Since one cannot cross, there is no advantage in any direction.
