'Luan' (bound together) is pronounced as a fanqie of li and yuan.

Nine in the Fifth Place is firm, strong, central, and correct, possessing the reality of Inner Truth and occupying the honored position as the lord of sincere trust.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fifth line occupies the ruler's position. The way of a sovereign is to use consummate sincerity to move and unite all under Heaven, causing the hearts of the realm to trust him and bind together as if tightly chained; then there is no blame.

If a ruler's trust cannot bind the world together like this, how can he ensure that the hearts of the millions will not fall away?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The fifth line occupies the honored seat of rulership; by virtue of the central and correct Dao, it can make all under Heaven trust it as firmly as if tightly bound, thus proving worthy of its position. The way of a sovereign ought to be like this.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

'Luan ru' (bound together) expresses the binding attachment of sincere trust. Dwelling in a time when inner sincerity is mutually exchanged and occupying the honored seat as master of all creatures, how could trust ever be abandoned?

Therefore, only when 'possessing trust that binds together' can it attain 'no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Sub-commentary: 'Possessing trust that binds together, no blame': 'luan ru' describes drawing together and being bound continuously without break. The fifth line is in a time of trust, occupying the honored position as lord of all things.

It must constantly interact with creatures through inner sincerity; how could sincere trust be cast aside even for a moment? Hence it says: 'Possessing trust that binds together.'

Maintaining unbroken trust, it then attains freedom from blame; hence: 'Possessing trust that binds together, no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Sub-commentary: 'The position is correct and appropriate': because it rightfully occupies the honored seat, it is admonished to bind trust continuously so as to be free from blame.

If it merely relied on being a yang line in a correct position without maintaining unbroken trust, it would invite the suspicion of blame.
