Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yielding, compliant, and having attained correctness, it supports Nine in the Fifth Place above, possessing natural limitation; hence its image and omen are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fourth compliantly supports the way of firm centrality and correctness of Nine in the Fifth Place, thereby taking centrality and correctness as its limitation. Dwelling in a yin position with yin, it rests peacefully in correctness.

Occupying the proper position is the image of having limitation; responding below to the initial line, the fourth is part of the Kan body, which is water. Water overflowing upward lacks limitation; flowing downward has limitation.

The meaning of the fourth is not forced limitation, but resting content in limitation, which is why it leads to success. In limitation, resting content is considered good; holding fast by force without contentment cannot last—how could it bring success?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The reasons Six in the Fourth Place can rest content in limitation are not singular; the Xiang commentary singles out the most important: supporting upward the way of firm centrality and correctness of Nine in the Fifth Place as its limitation is sufficient to bring success.

Other virtues likewise do not depart from centrality and correctness.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Attaining its position and being compliant, it does not alter its limitation and is able to achieve success. Supporting the superior with this, it attains its proper path.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The correct meaning: Six in the Fourth Place attains its position and compliantly follows the fifth above, which is obtaining the way of limitation.

If one can peacefully practice this limitation without changing, wherever one goes will be successful, hence 'peaceful limitation brings success.'

This clarifies that Six in the Third Place, losing its position and riding on firmness, loses limitation and invites blame, whereas Six in the Fourth Place, attaining its position and supporting yang, rests peacefully in limitation and achieves success.

The correct meaning: 'Receiving the superior's way' means that because it is able to support the superior, it does not lose its proper way.
