I Ching casting

Holding the central position in the lower trigram, this strong line responds to the ruler at line five but must resist rash action that erodes self-respect.

Commentarial traditions caution that advancing impetuously brings misfortune, whereas remaining grounded in the center benefits all parties without requiring self-diminishment. Stand firmly upon your convictions rather than bending backward to appease others.

Career

When addressing expectations from leadership or key clients, maintaining professional standards and ethical boundaries is far more valuable than unconditional compliance.

Classical business ethics hold that providing objective, principled counsel earns lasting credibility and protects strategic operations. Communicate firmly from your area of expertise without conceding your core professional ground.

Love & relationships

Partnership thrives on mutual respect and balanced self-worth rather than one-sided subservience or fawning accommodation. Relational dynamics indicate that compromising personal ethics or boundaries to please a companion eventually breeds quiet resentment.

Retain your dignity and clear standards, as true intimacy deepens through balanced reciprocity.

Wealth

Financial decisions under this influence favor consolidation and the protection of primary capital rather than speculative initiatives. Sound monetary strategy warns against depleting assets merely to accommodate social pressure or speculative appeals.

Protect your existing reserves by declining risky commitments that compromise your financial base.

Line statement

2. The second line, undivided, shows that it will be advantageous for its subject to maintain a firm correctness, and that action on his part will be evil. He can give increase (to his correlate) without taking from himself.

Small Image

‘It will be advantageous for (the subject of) the second NINE, (undivided), to maintain his firm correctness:’—his central position gives its character to his aim.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Nine in the Second Place is firm and central; its will lies in preserving itself, unwilling to advance recklessly. Therefore, for the diviner, perseverance is advantageous, while advancing brings misfortune.

'Without decreasing, increasing it' means that not altering what one preserves is precisely the means by which one increases the superior.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Second Place, being firm and central, encounters the time of decreasing the firm; dwelling in yielding and part of the Joyous body, it corresponds above to the yin-yielding ruler of Six in the Fifth Place.

Responding to the upper with yielding joyfulness would forfeit its virtue of firm centrality; hence it is warned that what is advantageous lies in correct perseverance. Zheng means advancing; departing from the center loses correct perseverance and brings misfortune.

Preserving its center is perseverance. 'Without decreasing, increasing it': by not decreasing its own firm correctness, it can benefit its superior, which is truly increasing it.

If it loses firm correctness and uses yielding flattery, it will only bring decrease to the superior, not decreasing oneself to increase the upper.

Foolish people of the world, though lacking evil intent, only know how to exhaust their strength in complying with superiors as loyalty, because they do not understand the meaning of 'without decreasing, increasing it.'

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Nine occupying the second position is not in its correct place; being in the Joyous trigram is not firm; yet attaining the center is good. If it preserves the virtue of its center, how could there be anything not good? How could there be the center without correctness?

How could there be the center with fault? What the second line refers to as 'advantageous in perseverance' means taking the center as one's will. When the will abides in the center, it becomes naturally correct.

In general, the center is weightier than correctness: what is central is correct, but what is correct is not necessarily central. Being able to preserve the center brings increase to the superior.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Yielding below may be entirely increased, but firmness cannot be entirely pared away; the lower cannot lack correctness.

Nine at the Beginning has already decreased firmness to comply with yielding; if Nine in the Second Place, treading the center, were again to decrease itself to increase yielding, the way of Splitting Apart would be accomplished.

Therefore it must not hasten to go, and 'perseverance is advantageous.' Advancing toward yielding brings misfortune; hence it says, 'Advancing brings misfortune.' Therefore Nine in the Second Place does not decrease itself but strives to increase, taking the center as its will.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: Yielding cannot be entirely increased, firmness cannot be entirely pared away, and the lower cannot lack correctness.

Nine at the Beginning has already decreased firmness to increase yielding, complying with Six in the Fourth Place to make Six at the Beginning; if Nine in the Second Place were again to decrease itself to increase Six in the Fifth Place to make Six in the Second Place, it would form the hexagram Splitting Apart.

Therefore Nine in the Second Place finds it advantageous to dwell and preserve correctness; advancing toward yielding brings misfortune; hence it says, 'Perseverance is advantageous; advancing brings misfortune.'

Since advancing brings misfortune, Nine in the Second Place does not decrease itself but strives to increase; hence it says, 'Without decreasing, increasing it.'

The Sub-commentary states: Regarding 'Taking the center as its will': the reason Nine in the Second Place can dwell and preserve perseverance without decreasing while increasing is entirely due to dwelling in the center and taking the center as its will; thus its decreasing and increasing attain proper moderation.
