Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yielding, compliant, central, and correct, its proper partner is above yet trapped amidst danger; hence it encounters obstruction upon obstruction in seeking to rescue him, not for the sake of its own person.

That it does not speak of good or bad fortune means the diviner must simply exert himself to the utmost with total devotion; as for success or failure, advantage or setback, that is not for him to consider. Though the matter is not accomplished, there is still no blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Two dwells in the Gen trigram with the virtue of central correctness, resting firmly in the Central Position; resonating with Five, it represents a person of central correctness trusted by a ruler of central correctness, hence called 'the king's minister'.

Although above and below share the same virtue, Five is currently in the midst of great Obstruction; dedicating oneself during a time of hardship and danger, the obstacles are exceedingly severe, hence 'obstruction upon obstruction'.

Although Two is central and correct, can one of yin, yielding talent easily shoulder such a heavy burden? This is why there is obstruction upon obstruction. Its will is set on rescuing the ruler from hardship, and its enduring of repeated difficulties is not for its own sake.

Even if it cannot prevail, its intent and righteousness are commendable; hence its loyalty and devotion are praised as selfless.

Yet its talent is insufficient to fully overcome the Obstruction; had it been able to overcome it even slightly, the sage would have praised it grandly as an encouragement.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Though distressed by hardships in a time of Obstruction, its will is set on rescuing the sovereign from danger; though it has not yet achieved success, in the end it incurs no blame.

The sage singles out its righteous intent and declares it blameless in order to encourage utmost loyalty.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in a time of difficulty, treading in its proper position, residing without losing centrality to respond to the Fifth.

It does not stay aloof to avoid harm just because the Fifth is amidst difficulty; holding its resolve without wavering, its will is to succor the royal house. Hence it is said: 'The king's minister encounters obstruction upon obstruction, but not for his own sake.'

Treading the center and practicing righteousness to preserve his superior, and facing Obstruction to draw close to him, no fault can be seen in him.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: 'King' refers to Five. 'Minister' refers to Two. Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the kingly throne yet is trapped amidst difficulty; Six in the Second Place is Five's minister, going forward to respond to Five.

Treading in correctness and dwelling in the center, his will is to succor the royal house; able to wade through hardships to go and rescue him from obstruction, hence it is said: 'The king's minister encounters obstruction upon obstruction.'

He devotes full loyalty to his ruler, not holding back from rescuing his lord for his own private sake; hence it is said: 'Not for his own sake.' The Correct Meaning states: 'In the end, no blame': dwelling in difficulty in this manner, how could there be any fault or blame?
