Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Six in the Second Place is yielding, compliant, central, and correct; she is the woman who maintains her correct position within. Hence the image and omen are like this.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

In human family life, between flesh and blood, father and son, emotion generally overpowers reason and affection displaces righteousness. Only a firm and resolute person can avoid abandoning correct principle for personal love.

Therefore, in the Hexagram of The Family, firmness is generally regarded as good, as seen in the first, third, and top lines.

Six in the Second Place possesses yin and yielding talent and occupies a yielding place, unable to take charge of governing the family; hence "she has nothing to pursue," meaning whatever she initiates will not do.

Even with heroic talent, men are sometimes drowned in emotional attachment and cannot hold fast to principle; how much less can a weak and yielding person overcome the partialities of wife and child?

If talent like line Two's is applied to the way of the wife, it is her true correctness. Dwelling in central correctness with yielding compliance is the proper path of the wife; hence abiding in the preparation of food, she attains correctness and good fortune.

The wife dwells in the inner quarters and presides over food and offerings; hence it says "the preparation of food."

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Line Two, being yin and yielding, dwells in central correctness, able to follow compliantly and humbly defer. Hence it is the wife's perseverance bringing good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling inside and occupying the center, it treads in its proper position, responding with yin to yang and exhausting the correctness of womanhood.

By principle, she has nothing she must pursue on her own; her duty lies solely in "the preparation of food," being compliant and submissive. Therefore, "perseverance brings good fortune."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: Six in the Second Place treads the center and dwells in its position, responding with yin to yang, which fulfills the duty of womanhood. In the way of a woman, compliance and obedience are the constant norm, with nothing she must execute arbitrarily.

Her appointed charge lies merely in preparing food and offering sacrifices within the home, attaining a woman's upright good fortune; hence it says: "She has nothing to pursue; she abides in the preparation of food. Perseverance brings good fortune."

The Sub-commentary states: This cites the line's position. Saying "good fortune" makes clear that by being yielding, central, and obtaining the correct position, she is able to be compliant and submissive, thereby obtaining good fortune.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Second Place, Line 2, Lower-Medium: A mirror breaks, reflecting two persons. The knot in the heart binds, uniting into one mind.
