Yichuan YizhuanLine statement
Although the second line is a yin line, it occupies a position that is central and correct, and is in close adjacency to the initial line. Its will follows the yang, and it is able to humble itself before benevolence. It represents the finest and most auspicious aspect of Return.
Returning means returning to propriety; returning to propriety constitutes benevolence. The initial yang returns, which is returning to benevolence; the second line is adjacent to it and subordinates itself to it, which is why it is fine and auspicious.
Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image
That it is the finest and most auspicious return is because it can humble itself before benevolence. Benevolence is the common good of all under Heaven and the root of virtue.
The initial line returns to benevolence, and the second line is able to draw close and humble itself before it; therefore it is auspicious.
Zhouyi ZhuLine statement
Obtaining its proper place and dwelling in the center, it is most adjacent to the initial line. Above, there is no other yang line to cast doubt on its intimacy.
Yang represents benevolent action; resting above the initial line, it attaches itself to and yields to it, which is meant by 'humbling oneself before benevolence.'
Having occupied the central position, drawing close to the benevolent and being friendly with its neighbor, this is the finest Return.
