Interpret through classical principles in two layers: 1) Structural Evidence: identify key line dynamics, changing line pivot, or element balance. 2) Actionable Verdict: direct answer to the inquiry in plain language, followed by 2–3 concrete next steps (action-verb first) and mindful cautions. I Ching casting

Positioned as a yielding yin line riding upon yang energy, this position tends toward procrastination and appeasement rather than urgent reform.

The classical tradition warns that tolerating decay only lets systemic damage entrench itself, rendering any forward push weak and flawed. Looking the other way preserves an illusion of peace while unresolved issues are left to erupt later into a crisis that is hard to contain.

Career

Overlooking workflow bottlenecks, team complacency, or procedural violations out of convenience will only multiply operational friction later. Forcing a project forward while known foundational flaws remain unaddressed invites visible embarrassment and rework.

Addressing the core malfunction immediately is far wiser than hoping neglected defects will fix themselves.

Love & relationships

Tolerating persistent boundary breaches or glossing over fundamental incompatibilities creates a fragile facade of harmony. Withholding honest boundaries out of a fear of conflict gradually erodes emotional safety and mutual respect.

Halting passive accommodation and speaking clearly about core needs is essential before resentment hardens permanently.

Wealth

Ignoring recurring expenses, dubious financial commitments, or creeping debt leaves resources vulnerable to ongoing attrition. Delaying corrective audits or doubling down on questionable holdings will only deepen the financial bind.

Tightening financial boundaries and facing accumulated obligations directly is the only way to halt silent balance sheet leakage.

Line statement

4. The fourth line, divided, shows (a son) viewing indulgently the troubles caused by his father. If he go forward, he will find cause to regret it.

Small Image

‘He views indulgently the troubles caused by his father:’—if he go forward, he will not succeed.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Dwelling in a yin position with yin, it cannot take action; this is the image of being indulgent in managing decay. Acting like this, decay will deepen day by day; hence going forward brings humiliation. It warns the diviner not to act in this manner.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fourth line, dwelling in a yin position with yin, has a yielding and compliant talent. The position it occupies is correct, hence it is one who acts with leniency in managing the father's affairs.

A yielding and compliant talent dwelling in correctness can only maintain ordinary routines; if it goes forward to manage extraordinary affairs, it will prove unequal to the task and meet humiliation. Being yin-yielding without an ally, how could going forward achieve anything?

The Image says: 'Being indulgent toward the father's decay; going forward, one has not yet succeeded.' With the talent of the fourth line, maintaining the ordinary and dwelling in a time of leniency is acceptable; wanting to go forward, one will not succeed.

If greater burdens are placed upon it, it cannot endure.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Embodying yielding and occupying the proper position, it manages not with firmness but with gentle harmony, capable of being lenient with past affairs. Yet lacking an ally, going forward will surely meet disharmony; hence it is said, 'Going forward, one meets humiliation.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'The Image says' to 'meets humiliation.'

The correct commentary explains: 'Being indulgent toward the father's decay' means that embodying yielding and occupying the proper position, managing not with firmness but with gentle harmony, it can accommodate and be lenient with the father's affairs.

'Going forward, one meets humiliation' means that because it lacks an ally, wherever it goes it meets humiliation and distress; hence 'going forward, one has not yet succeeded.'
