Judgment

For (the realisation of what is taught in) K\k Z&n, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.

Tuan commentary

In Kiâ Zăn the wife has her correct place in the inner (trigram), and the man his correct place in the outer. That man and woman occupy their correct places is the great righteousness shown (in the relation and positions of) heaven and earth.

In Kiâ Zăn we have the idea of an authoritative ruler;—that, namely, represented by the parental authority.

Let the father be indeed father, and the son son; let the elder brother be indeed elder brother, and the younger brother younger brother, let the husband be indeed husband, and the wife wife:—then will the family be in its normal state.

Bring the family to that state, and all under heaven will be established.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) fire, and that for wind coming forth from it, form Kiâ Zăn. The superior man, in accordance with this, orders his words according to (the truth of) things, and his conduct so that it is uniformly consistent.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

The Family refers to the people of a single household. In this Gua, Nine in the Fifth Place and Six in the Second Place each obtain their correct places outside and inside; hence it is called The Family.

"It is beneficial for a woman to be steadfast" because one desires first to rectify the interior; when the interior is upright, nothing on the outside will fail to be upright.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explaining the meaning of "beneficial for a woman to be steadfast" through the hexagram structure of Nine in the Fifth Place and Six in the Second Place. Also referring to lines Two and Five.

The top line is the father, the first line is the son; the fifth and third are husbands, the fourth and second are wives; the fifth is the elder brother, the third is the younger brother—deduced from the hexagram lines, these images also appear.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

The character 行 (xíng) is pronounced in the falling tone (xìng). When the person is cultivated, the family is regulated.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

The Family in the Sequence of the Guas: Yi means wounded; one who is wounded outside must return home, hence it is followed by The Family. Suffering injury and exhaustion outside inevitably leads one to turn back inward; this is why The Family follows Darkening of the Light.

The Family represents the way within the household: the affection between father and son, the righteousness between husband and wife, the order between elder and younger, the honorable and the humble—rectifying human relationships and deepening love and righteousness are the way of The Family.

In this Gua, Xun is outside and Li is inside, signifying wind emerging from fire. When fire blazes, wind is generated; the wind is born of the fire, emerging from within. Emerging from within is the image of extending from the family to the outside.

The second and fifth lines rectify the positions of woman and man inside and outside, constituting the way of The Family. Being bright within and gentle without is the way to govern the household.

If a person embodies these qualities within their own person, they can apply them to their family; what is practiced in the family can be applied to the state, extending to the governance of all under heaven.

The way to govern all under heaven is none other than the way to govern the family, merely extended and practiced outward. Hence the image of emerging from within is taken as the meaning of The Family.

The book of Wenzhongzi takes "clarifying the interior and regulating the exterior" as its meaning, which has been praised through the ages, yet this was not the intention of the hexagram's imagery.

The phrase "regulated in Xun" means that all things are made clean and orderly in the direction of Xun, not that Xun itself carries the inherent meaning of regulating—just as "warring in Qian" does not mean Qian has an inherent meaning of warfare.

In the way of The Family, benefit lies in the woman's correctness; when the woman is correct, the family's way is correct. Husband and wife each fulfilling their role rectifies the family way.

Saying solely "it is beneficial for a woman to be steadfast" means that the husband's correctness is rectifying oneself, while the woman's correctness is rectifying the entire family. When the woman is correct, the man's correctness is already known.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

The *Tuan* speaks in terms of hexagram talents: the yang line dwelling in the fifth is on the outside; the yin line dwelling in the second is on the inside. Man and woman each obtain their correct positions.

The principle of high and low, inner and outer, is in perfect harmony with the great righteousness of heaven, earth, yin, and yang. This refers to lines Two and Five.

In the way of The Family, there must be those who are revered and respected as masters and leaders, referring to the father and mother.

Even in the small sphere of a single household, without reverence and authority, filial respect declines; without rulers and elders, laws and standards are abandoned. Only when there are stern rulers is the family way set right. The family is the model for the state.

When father and son, elder and younger brothers, husband and wife each attain their proper way, the family way is correct. Extending the way of a single family reaches all under heaven; therefore, when the family is rectified, all under heaven is stabilized.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

The foundation of rectifying the family lies in cultivating one's person. In the way of cultivating the person, not a single word or single act may be taken lightly.

The noble person, observing the image of wind emerging from fire, knows that affairs proceed from within to the outside; therefore, what is spoken must have substance, and what is done must have constancy.

"Substance" refers to actual facts; "constancy" refers to abiding standards and laws. The manifestation of virtue and deeds on the outside stems from the prudence of words and deeds on the inside.

When words are guarded and conduct is cultivated, the person is rectified and the family is ordered.

Zhouyi ZhuJudgment

The meaning of The Family is that each person cultivates the way of their own household, unable to know the affairs of others outside the home.

Taken comprehensively, it is not the great, expansive perseverance of the noble person; hence it says "beneficial for a woman to be steadfast." Its correctness is confined strictly to the interior of the home.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Referring to Six in the Second Place. Referring to Nine in the Fifth Place. The meaning of The Family takes the interior as its root, which is why it speaks of the woman first.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Proceeding from within, they mutually complete and fuel each other. The way of The Family is cultivated in what is near and small, without recklessness.

Therefore, the noble person ensures that words must have substance so the mouth utters no loose talk, and actions must have constancy so the person commits no errant deeds.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Sub-commentary states: "The Family" is the name of the Gua. It clarifies the way within the home and rectifies the people of a single household; hence it is called "The Family."

"It is beneficial for a woman to be steadfast" means that having cultivated the way within the home, one cannot know the affairs of others outside.

Considered as a whole, this is not the broad correctness of the noble gentleman, hence it merely says "beneficial for a woman to be steadfast."

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From "The *Tuan* says" down to "the man's correct position is on the outside": The Sub-commentary states: This explains the meaning of "The Family" and clarifies the purpose of the woman's perseverance through lines Two and Five attaining correctness.

In the way of The Family, the woman must govern within and the man must govern without; only then is the family way established. In this Gua, Six in the Second Place is yielding and occupies its proper position—this is the woman having her correct position on the inside.

Nine in the Fifth Place is firm and occupies its proper position—this is the man having his correct position on the outside. In The Family, "the interior is the root, hence it speaks of the woman first."

From "The woman and the man are correct" down to "all under heaven is stabilized": The Sub-commentary states: "The woman and the man being correct is the great righteousness of heaven and earth": using the words on correct positions, this broadens the meaning of The Family to equal the way of the Two Regulators (Heaven and Earth); hence it says "the great righteousness of heaven and earth."

"The Family has stern rulers in it, meaning the father and mother": having stated above that its righteousness equals heaven and earth, here it shows that its way is on par with the state.

The father and mother are the masters of the household, whom family members revere and serve just as a state has stern rulers; hence it says "The Family has stern rulers in it, meaning the father and mother."

"When father is father, son is son, elder brother is elder brother, younger brother is younger brother, husband is husband, and wife is wife, the family way is correct; rectify the family and all under heaven is stabilized": this praises the merit of rectifying the family, which can bring peace to all under heaven, reaffirming that its way equals governing states.

When the family has stern rulers, the father does not fail in fatherhood down to the wife not failing in wifehood; honorable and humble have their order, superior and inferior do not err, and only then is the family way made correct.

When each rectifies their own family and no family is unrectified, the governance of all under heaven is stabilized.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Sub-commentary states: Xun is outside Li; this is wind emerging from fire. When fire first emerges, it blazes on account of the wind; once the fire flourishes, it in turn generates wind. Inside and outside complete each other, resembling the principle of The Family.

Hence it says: "Wind emerging from fire: The Family." The Sub-commentary states: "Substance" means real affairs. When words must have substance, the mouth utters no loose talk. When actions must have constancy, the person commits no errant deeds.

The righteousness of rectifying the family is cultivated in what is near and small. Words and deeds are the hinge and trigger of the noble person. Proceeding from oneself, they affect others; issuing from nearby, they transform the distant.

Therefore, words and deeds are cited as admonitions. Words are said to have "substance," while actions are said to have "constancy"; speaking and acting must both conform to what can be enduring, complementing each other.
