He who conquers himself is strong.
Yichuan YizhuanJudgment
Great Strength follows in the Sequence of the Gua: Retreat signifies pulling back; things cannot retreat forever, hence it is received by Great Strength. Retreat bears the meaning of departing; Strength bears the meaning of advancing and flourishing.
Retreat is when Yin grows and Yang retreats; Great Strength is the vigor and fullness of Yang. When decline reaches its limit, flourishing must follow; waxing and waning depend on each other, so once retreat occurs, strength must follow.
This is why Great Strength succeeds Retreat. As a Gua, Zhen is above and Qian is below; Qian is firm and Zhen moves. Moving through firmness is the meaning of Great Strength.
Firmness and Yang represent the great; Yang has already grown past the middle, so the great is vigorous and flourishing. Furthermore, the awe-inspiring thunder shaking high in Heaven also carries the meaning of Great Strength.
The Dao of Great Strength favors perseverance and correctness. If Great Strength does not attain correctness, it is merely fierce violence, not the flourishing strength of the gentleman's Dao.
Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary
The reason it is named Great Strength is that the great becomes strong. Yin is the small; Yang is the great. When Yang grows to abundance, the great becomes strong.
Firm below and moving above, it moves with the utmost firmness of Qian, hence it is Great Strength—meaning both the great becoming strong and the greatness of strength. 'Can be seen.' Once the great has become strong, it is favorable to persevere with correctness.
That which is correct and great is the Dao. When the principle of correctness and greatness is carried to its utmost, the true condition of Heaven and Earth can be seen.
The Dao of Heaven and Earth endures constantly and ceaselessly because it is supremely great and supremely correct. The principle of correctness and greatness can be understood silently and comprehended intuitively by scholars.
It does not say 'great correctness' but 'correctness and greatness,' lest people mistakenly regard them as a single attribute.
Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image
Thunder shakes high in Heaven, vast and mighty. The gentleman observes the image of Great Strength to enact his vigor. For the gentleman's great strength, nothing surpasses conquering oneself and returning to propriety. The ancients said: 'Self-mastery is called strength.'
The Doctrine of the Mean says: 'Harmonious without drifting, standing upright without leaning—how strong is such vigor!'
Charging into boiling water and fire, or treading on bare blades, may be achieved through the boldness of common warriors; but as for conquering oneself and returning to propriety, unless one possesses the great strength of a gentleman, it is impossible.
Hence it says: 'The gentleman treads on nothing that departs from propriety.'
Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary
The great refers to the Yang lines. The way of the small is about to perish, and the great attains correctness, hence 'it is favorable to persevere.' The true condition of Heaven and Earth is nothing other than correctness and greatness.
When greatness is made vast and correctness is carried to the utmost, the true condition of Heaven and Earth becomes visible.
Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image
Moving with firmness. If strength violates propriety, it brings misfortune; misfortune results in the loss of strength. Therefore, the gentleman uses Great Strength to comply with the proper pattern.

The Correct Meaning says: Great Strength is the name of the Gua. Strength is the term for being strong and flourishing. Since Yang is called great, and Yang has already grown extensively, the great is strong and flourishing, hence it is called 'Great Strength.'
'Favorable to persevere' refers to the virtue of the Gua. As the host of Yang lines becomes vast and flourishing, the way of the small is on the verge of vanishing, and the great attains correctness, hence 'it is favorable to persevere.'
Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary
From 'The Tuan says' to 'Strength.' The Correct Meaning says: 'The great is strong' explains the name of the Gua in terms of the lines. The Yang lines gradually grow and have already reached the fourth; this means the great is strong and flourishing, hence 'the great is strong.'
Regarding the note 'The great refers to the Yang lines' to 'favorable to persevere': The Correct Meaning says: Below the explanation of the name, it additionally explains 'favorable to persevere,' completing the meaning of 'the great.'
The Correct Meaning says: 'Firm and moving, hence strong' explains the name of the Gua in terms of the two constituent trigrams. Qian is firm and Zhen moves; moving with softness brings retreat and weakness, but moving with firmness and strength establishes strength.
'Great Strength: favorable to persevere, the great is correct' explains the virtue of the Gua in terms of the lines. Because the great attains correctness, it achieves 'favorable to persevere.'
Regarding 'in correctness and greatness, the true condition of Heaven and Earth can be seen': because the great attains correctness, it broadly praises the meaning of rectifying humanity.
The Dao of Heaven and Earth is vastly correct and supremely great; therefore, through correctness and greatness, the true condition of Heaven and Earth is revealed.
It does not mention 'all things' because the title of Great Strength assigns its meaning to the celestial extreme, and thus it is not the same as Xian (Influence) and Heng (Duration).
Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image
