Judgment

Yü indicates that, (in the state which it implies), feudal princes may be set up, and the hosts put in motion, with advantage.

Tuan commentary

In Yü we see the strong (line) responded to by all the others, and the will (of him whom it represents) being carried out; and (also) docile obedience employing movement (for its purposes). (From these things comes) Yü (the Condition of harmony and satisfaction).

In this condition we have docile obedience employing movement (for its purposes), and therefore it is so as between heaven and earth;—how much more will it be so (among men) in ‘the setting up of feudal princes and putting the hosts in motion!’

Heaven and earth show that docile obedience in connexion with movement, and hence the sun and moon make no error (in time), and the four seasons do not deviate (from their order).

The sages show such docile obedience in connexion with their movements, and hence their punishments and penalties are entirely just, and the people acknowledge it by their submission. Great indeed are the time and significance indicated in Yü!

Great Image

(The trigrams for) the earth and thunder issuing from it with its crashing noise form Yü.

The ancient kings, in accordance with this, composed their music and did honour to virtue, presenting it especially and most grandly to God, when they associated with Him (at the service) their highest ancestor and their father.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Enthusiasm denotes harmony and joy. The hearts of the people are harmonious and joyful, responding to those above. Nine in the Fourth Place, a single yang, is responded to by all above and below, and its will is carried out.

Furthermore, with Kūn meeting Zhèn, it represents moving in compliance; hence the hexagram is Enthusiasm, and its prognosis indicates it is advantageous to establish feudatories and mobilize armies.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explaining the name and meaning of the hexagram via the hexagram structure and hexagram virtues. Explaining the hexagram judgment via the hexagram virtues. Expressing it to the utmost and praising its greatness.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Thunder issues from the earth and bursts forth, the perfection of harmony. The ancient kings composed music, both modeling it on the sound and adopting its meaning. '殷' (yīn) means grand and abundant.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

The Sequence of Hexagrams for Enthusiasm says: 'One who possesses greatness and can remain modest is sure to experience enthusiasm; hence, after Modesty, Enthusiasm follows.' It inherits the meaning of the two hexagrams to form this sequence.

Having achieved greatness and yet remaining modest, there is joyful enthusiasm. Enthusiasm carries the meaning of peaceful harmony and delight. In terms of the hexagram figure, Zhèn is above and Kūn is below, presenting the image of compliant movement.

Moving while in harmonious compliance, it is therefore Enthusiasm. Nine in the Fourth Place is the master of movement, to whom the yin lines above and below all respond together.

Kūn further bears it with compliance; thus, moving while the above and below respond compliantly, it embodies the meaning of harmonious enthusiasm. Speaking in terms of the two component images, thunder emerges from the earth.

Yang originally lay hidden and closed within the earth; when it stirs and comes forth from the earth, bursting with resounding sound, it flows freely in harmonious enthusiasm; therefore it is Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm means moving in compliance.

The meaning of Enthusiasm is that it is advantageous to establish feudatories and mobilize armies. Now, establishing feudatories and planting defensive screens serves to secure all under Heaven together.

When the feudatories are harmonious and compliant, the myriad people rejoice and submit. When armies are raised, if the hearts of the multitude are harmonious and joyful, they follow compliantly and achieve merit.

Therefore, the way of joyful enthusiasm is advantageous for establishing feudatories and mobilizing armies. Moreover, the upper stirs while the lower complies, presenting the image of feudal lords following the king and an army complying with commands.

To govern myriad states and assemble great multitudes, without harmony and joy one cannot make them submit.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Firmness responded to means that the fourth line is responded to by the crowd of yin lines; the firm line receives the response of the multitude.

The carrying out of the will means that the yang will moves upward, stirring while those above and below comply; its will is carried out. Moving in compliance is Enthusiasm: Zhèn is movement and Kūn is compliance; this signifies moving in accordance with principle.

Moving in accord with principle, it further signifies moving while the multitude complies; hence it is Enthusiasm.

Moving in joyful enthusiasm and compliance, even Heaven and Earth act accordingly without contradiction—how much more so in establishing feudatories and mobilizing armies, which cannot fail to be compliant!

The way of Heaven and Earth and the principles of myriad things are nothing other than supreme compliance. The reason the great man precedes Heaven and Heaven does not oppose him, or follows Heaven and conforms to its seasons, is simply compliance with principle.

Explaining the way of compliant movement in further detail: the movements of Heaven and Earth move in compliance, so the measurements of the sun and moon do not exceed their bounds, and the courses of the four seasons do not deviate.

The sage moves in compliance, so the fundamental norms are upright, the people are inspired to goodness, punishments are clear and simple, and the myriad people submit. Exclamation.

Having expounded the way of enthusiasm and compliance, its flavor remains profound and enduring; the words are exhausted, but the meaning continues beyond them. Therefore he praises it further, saying: 'Great indeed are the time and meaning of Enthusiasm!'

He desires that people study and savor its principle, gently steeping and immersing themselves in it to understand it. 'Time and meaning' refers to the time and meaning of Enthusiasm.

When the time, meaning, and application of a hexagram are vast, they are all praised with 'great indeed!'

The eleven hexagrams from Enthusiasm downward are cases in point: Enthusiasm, Retreat, Coming to Meet, and The Wanderer speak of 'time and meaning'; The Abysmal (Water), Opposition, and Obstruction speak of 'time and application'; Nourishment, Preponderance of the Great, Deliverance, and Revolution (Molting) speak of 'time'—each according to what is greatest in it.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Thunder is the bursting forth of yang qi, where yin and yang press against each other to produce sound. Yang at first lies submerged and enclosed within the earth; when it moves, it bursts forth from the earth in shock and thunder.

Starting from confinement and depression and bursting into release, it becomes thoroughly free, harmonious, and joyful; hence it is Enthusiasm. Kūn is compliance and Zhèn is arousal; harmony and compliance accumulate within and burst forth in sound, which is the image of music.

The ancient kings observed the image of thunder issuing from the earth and bursting forth, its harmonious resonance finding voice in sound, and created music.

Music serves to extol and venerate merit and virtue; its grand abundance went so far as offering it to the Supreme Lord and associating the ancestors with Him in sacrifice. '殷' (yīn) means grand and abundant. The Rites speak of the 'yin sacrifice,' meaning grand.

Offering to the Supreme Lord and associating ancestors is the very pinnacle of grand abundance.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Zhengyi commentary states: It is called Enthusiasm (Yù) taking the meaning of leisure and ease; moving with harmonious compliance, movement does not contradict the multitude, and the multitude is joyful and pleased; hence it is called Enthusiasm.

Moving while the multitude rejoices, it is advantageous to establish feudatories. Moving in compliance, it does not inflict harm on the innocent; hence an army may be mobilized.

It lacks the four virtues because matters of leisure and ease cannot be practiced constantly, but are undertaken according to the time. Matters of indulgence and relaxation cannot be prolonged to govern the state and instruct custom; hence it lacks Supreme and Penetrating.

Leisure and ease are not the way to manage uprightness; hence it does not state 'Advantageous and Correct.' Master Zhuang said: 'Establishing feudatories corresponds to Supreme and Penetrating; mobilizing an army corresponds to Advantageous and Correct.'

We observe: In Difficulty at the Beginning, after 'Supreme and Penetrating, Advantageous and Correct,' it separately states 'Advantageous to establish feudatories,' which proves that 'establishing feudatories' is not 'Supreme and Penetrating.'

It is feared that Master Zhuang's explanation is incorrect.

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From 'The Tuan says: Enthusiasm, firmness is responded to and the will is carried out' to 'great indeed.'

The Zhengyi commentary states: 'In Enthusiasm, firmness is responded to and the will is carried out; moving in compliance is Enthusiasm'—'firmness' refers to Nine in the Fourth Place; 'responded to' refers to Six at the Beginning.

Since yin and yang respond to each other, 'the will is carried out.' This explains the meaning of Enthusiasm in terms of the lines. Moving in compliance: Kūn is below, which is compliance; Zhèn is above, which is movement. Moving in compliance, it is therefore Enthusiasm.

This clarifies the meaning of Enthusiasm through the two component images. From here upward, the principle of the Enthusiasm hexagram is explained.

'Moving in joyful enthusiasm and compliance, even Heaven and Earth act accordingly; how much more so in establishing feudatories and mobilizing armies!' explains 'advantageous to establish feudatories and mobilize armies.'

If the sage moves with harmonious compliance, matching the virtue of Heaven and Earth, then Heaven and Earth also act just as the sage does.

Heaven and Earth are exalted, vast, and distant, their spiritual powers profound and formidable, yet they still act accordingly—how much more so in establishing feudatories and marching with armies in punitive campaigns! Once the difficult follows, the easy is evident.

If 'establishing feudatories' can move in compliance, the people will follow. If 'mobilizing armies' can move in compliance, the multitude will follow. Heaven and Earth move in compliance, so the sun and moon do not exceed their measures, and the four seasons do not err.

From here downward, the efficacy of the compliant movement of Heaven and Earth and the sage is broadly expounded.

If Heaven and Earth move in compliance, the sun and moon do not err in their deviations, adhering to their shadow measures, and the four seasons do not undergo abnormal shifts, cold and heat arriving in their proper times.

'When the sage moves in compliance, punishments are clear and the people submit' means that when the sage is able to move in accord with principle and compliance, he does not pardon the guilty nor harm the innocent; hence 'punishments are clear.'

Punishments being in accord with principle, the people submit. 'Great indeed are the time and meaning of Enthusiasm!' praises the goodness of Enthusiasm, saying that in the time of leisure and enthusiasm, its meaning is vast indeed. This is a praise of the hexagram.

Whenever words cannot exhaust the meaning, one cannot multiply cumbersome explanations; one instead sighs in praise to express the sentiment, leading later scholars to contemplate what remains unsaid, grasping the idea and forgetting the words.

Yet praises of hexagrams have three forms: first, praising only the time, as in 'great indeed is the time of Preponderance of the Great'; second, praising the time together with the application, as in 'great indeed are the time and application of Danger'; third, praising the time together with the meaning, as in 'great indeed are the time and meaning of Enthusiasm.'

Now, the composition of each hexagram figure models its respective time. Times have difficulty and peace, and affairs do not follow a single measure; hence when lines encounter their times, there are both misfortune and good fortune.

A person living in the world is also like this: sometimes meeting an era of order, sometimes encountering an era of chaos; the way of holding oneself and retiring or serving—how could this be trivial? Hence it says 'great indeed!'

Yet though temporal fortunes are manifold, in broad terms they do not go beyond four kinds: first, times of order, such as the age of 'Nourishment'; second, times of chaos, such as the age of 'Preponderance of the Great'; third, times of dispersion, such as the age of 'Deliverance and relaxation'; fourth, times of change and reform, such as the age of 'Revolution and transformation.'

Therefore, these four hexagrams are cited for their time in praise, and the rest can be known from them. Speaking of 'application' refers to applying what is fitting for the time.

Though knowing that dwelling in difficult times is no small matter, one still needs to know how to apply it. Therefore, in the times of The Abysmal (Water), Opposition, and Obstruction, it is fitting to employ the gentleman, and the petty person should not be employed.

Using danger to achieve deliverance cannot be a constant practice; weighing and balancing what is appropriate constitutes the broad principle of applying the time. These three hexagrams of danger and obstruction are cited, and the rest follow accordingly.

Furthermore, speaking of 'meaning': the commentary to Coming to Meet states, 'Whenever meaning is mentioned, it is not exhausted by what is visible; there is a further implied significance within.' Thus each of these times possesses an inner meaning.

Briefly illustrating an era of ease and pleasure, days of following and meeting, and times of secluded retreat and wandering—five hexagrams in all whose meaning is not small—the remaining hexagrams can likewise be understood.

The twelve hexagrams now praised are sufficient to illuminate the grand meaning and broaden the subtle principles. In all, twelve hexagrams exclaim 'great indeed!' at the end of the Tuan.

Enthusiasm, The Wanderer, Retreat, and Coming to Meet, four hexagrams in total, all say 'time and meaning.' The note to Coming to Meet says: 'Whenever meaning is mentioned, it is not exhausted by what is visible; there is a further implied significance within.'

Judging by this, each of the four hexagrams has not fully exhausted its principle; there remains further meaning within that cannot be completely set forth, so it is collectively called 'meaning.'

The Following hexagram also speaks of 'meaning,' but its phrasing differs slightly from the four.

While the four all say 'time and meaning,' Following says 'the meaning of following the times,' which not only means there is a distinct significance within, but also adopts the sense of adapting and pursuing the time; hence the variation 'great indeed is the meaning of following the times!'

Opposition, Obstruction, and The Abysmal (Water), these three hexagrams, all say 'time and application.' The commentary to Opposition states: 'The time of opposition and separation is not something a petty person can employ.'

Obstruction also says 'not something a petty person can employ.' These two hexagrams say 'great indeed' because the great man is able to employ them; hence it says 'great indeed!'

Within them there is no other residual meaning, only that the great man can employ them; hence they speak of 'application' and not 'meaning.'

The Abysmal (Water)'s 'time and application' differs slightly from Opposition and Obstruction, for the note states, 'It is not a constant application; its application depends on the time.'

This means that in the dangerous matters of The Abysmal, when the time requires its application, the benefit is immense; though the words 'time and application' are identical to Opposition and Obstruction, the meaning is distinct.

The time of Deliverance, the time of Revolution, the time of Nourishment, and the time of Preponderance of the Great—these four hexagrams simply say 'time,' without mentioning 'meaning' or 'application.'

The note to Deliverance says that in the time when difficulties are untied, it is not a time of managing difficulties, so it does not speak of 'application.' Its essence is fully exhausted in the name 'Deliverance,' with nothing hidden; hence it does not say 'meaning.'

Judging from this note, those that simply state 'time' have their meaning fully exhausted upon examining the name of the hexagram, with no residual meaning left within; hence they do not speak of 'meaning.'

The matters named by those hexagrams are already accomplished and require no distinct additional application; hence Deliverance, Revolution, and Nourishment have already accomplished their deeds and do not require the word 'application.'

Only Preponderance of the Great is termed 'time,' with the note stating: 'The time for the gentleman to take action.' Its principle differs slightly from Deliverance, Revolution, and Nourishment.

Preponderance of the Great is a time of active application, yet it is also simply called 'time' because by adopting the name 'Preponderance of the Great' its meaning is fully exhausted without residual significance; hence it simply says 'time,' neither speaking of 'meaning' nor mentioning 'application.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Zhengyi commentary states: Examining the images of the various hexagrams, some say 'clouds ascend to heaven,' and some say 'wind moves above heaven.'

Speaking by analogy, the present phrase should read 'thunder emerges above the earth,' yet it says 'thunder issues from the earth and bursts forth: Enthusiasm.' Thunder is the sound of yang qi; bursting forth is the state of shaking and moving.

Once thunder issues from the earth, shaking all things, they receive yang qi and come to life, each at ease and enthusiastic; hence it says 'thunder issues from the earth and bursts forth: Enthusiasm.'

'The ancient kings composed music to honor virtue' means that thunder provides stirring impulse, so the ancient kings modeled themselves on this stirring to create music, venerating and exalting virtuous achievements, for music serves to display exalted virtue.

'Offering it grandly to the Supreme Lord' means using this magnificent music to sacrifice to the Supreme Lord, imaging thunder rising from earth toward heaven. 'Associating their ancestors' means pairing the ancestors with the Supreme Lord in sacrifice.

Employing the founding ancestor and the deceased father: as when the Zhou, at the Xia summer solstice sacrifice to Heaven, paired the deity Lingweiyang with their founding ancestor Houji, and in the sacrifices at the Bright Hall to the Gods of the Five Directions paired their deceased father King Wen; hence it says 'associating their ancestors.'
