Great Image

(The trigram for) heaven and (that of) fire above it form Tâ Yû The superior man, in accordance with this, represses what is evil and gives distinction to what is good, in sympathy with the excellent Heaven-conferred (nature).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Da You means possession in great measure. Li resides above Qian; fire is in heaven, and there is nothing it does not illuminate.

Moreover, Six in the Fifth Place, a single yin line, occupies the honored position and keeps the center, while the five yang lines correspond to it; hence it is Possession in Great Measure.

Qian is strong and Li is bright; dwelling in honor and responding to Heaven, it possesses the way of supreme prevalence. If the diviner possesses its virtue, he will enjoy great goodness and success.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explaining the name and meaning of the hexagram by its structure: 'yielding' refers to Six in the Fifth Place; 'above and below' refers to the five yang lines. Explaining the hexagram statement by its virtues and structure: 'responding to Heaven' refers to Six in the Fifth Place.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Fire is in heaven; that which it illuminates is vast, forming the image of Possession in Great Measure. When possessions are vast and there is no way to govern them, calamity and strife will sprout in their midst.

The mandate of Heaven embraces good and rejects evil; thus curbing evil and promoting good is the means to obey Heaven. Turning inward to examine oneself, it is simply the same.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Possession in Great Measure: The Order of the Hexagrams says: 'He who joins in fellowship with others will surely find all things returning to him; hence it is received by Possession in Great Measure.'

Those who achieve fellowship with men are those to whom all things flock; this is why Possession in Great Measure follows Fellowship with Men. As a hexagram, fire is high in heaven.

Fire dwelling high shines far; of the multitude of all things, none is left unilluminated—this is the image of Possession in Great Measure.

Furthermore, a single yielding line dwells in the honored position, and all the yang lines respond in unison; dwelling in honor while practicing yielding makes one the refuge of all things. That above and below respond to it is the meaning of Possession in Great Measure.

Possession in Great Measure signifies grandeur, prosperity, and abundance. The capacity of the hexagram allows for supreme success.

In general, among the virtues of hexagrams, some derive their meaning directly from the hexagram's name, such as 'Holding Together brings good fortune' or 'Humility brings success.'

Some provide admonitions through the hexagram's core meaning, such as 'The Army: perseverance; the mature man brings good fortune' or 'Fellowship with men in the open: success.'

Others speak from the innate talent and capacity of the hexagram, such as 'Possession in Great Measure: supreme success.' Because it is firm, strong, civilized, bright, responds to Heaven, and acts in accord with the seasons, it is capable of supreme success.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

This explains why the hexagram is Possession in Great Measure. The Fifth line, as a yin dwelling in the sovereign's place, represents the yielding attaining the honored position. Dwelling in the center, it attains the way of great balance.

Being revered by all yang lines, above and below respond to it.

Indeed, dwelling in honor and holding to yielding is inherently that to which the multitude turns; moreover, possessing the virtues of an open center, radiant civilization, and great balance, above and below share the same purpose and respond to it.

This is why it is Possession in Great Measure. The virtue of the hexagram is firm and strong within, civilized and bright without. The ruler at Six in the Fifth Place responds to Nine in the Second Place of Qian.

The nature of the Fifth is yielding, compliant, and clear; it can compliantly respond to the Second, which is the lord of Qian. This is responding to Qian. Responding compliantly to Qian's movement means according with Heaven's timing.

Hence it is said: 'Responding to Heaven and acting in accord with the seasons.' Its virtue being such, it attains 'supreme success.' Wang Bi says: 'Without great pervasive openness, how could one attain Possession in Great Measure?

If there is Possession in Great Measure, there must be supreme success.' This fails to understand the hexagram's meaning.

The combination of Li and Qian creates the meaning of Possession in Great Measure, but the meaning of Possession in Great Measure does not of itself imply supreme success; it is because of its inherent capacity that it achieves supreme success.

There are instances of Possession in Great Measure that are not good, and those that cannot achieve success.

Where hexagrams possess all four virtues—yuan, heng, li, zhen—the Tuan commentary regularly glosses them as 'great success,' fearing people might conflate them with Qian and Kun.

When not accompanied by li and zhen, it is explained as 'supreme success' to bring out the full meaning of yuan. Yuan carries the sense of great goodness.

Four hexagrams have yuan heng: Da You, Gu, Sheng, and Ding; only in Sheng's Tuan commentary was it mistakenly copied from other hexagrams as 'great success.' One might ask: 'Why does yuan in other hexagrams differ from that in Qian?'

The answer is: In Qian, yuan bears the sense of the primordial beginning and of rising supreme above all creatures; other hexagrams cannot possess this meaning—for them it signifies merely goodness and greatness.

One might ask: 'It is acceptable for yuan to mean great, but why does it mean good?' The answer is: Yuan is the origin of things; in the origin of things, how could there be anything not good?

An undertaking achieves success and only afterwards suffers failure; failure never precedes completion. Flourishing is followed by decline; decline surely comes after flourishing. Gain is followed by loss; without gain, how could there be loss?

In matters of good and evil, order and chaos, right and wrong, all affairs under heaven follow this truth: the good must come first. Therefore the Wenyan Commentary says: 'Yuan is the chief of goodness.'

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Fire high in heaven shines upon the multitude of all things; hence it is Possession in Great Measure. Possession in Great Measure carries the meaning of abundance and multitude.

The gentleman observes the image of Possession in Great Measure, thereby checking and severing all evils and making manifest all kinds of good, so as to obey and honor the auspicious and beautiful mandate of Heaven.

When myriad things are abundant, differences of good and evil inevitably arise. When the gentleman enjoys the abundance of Possession in Great Measure, he should act on behalf of Heaven's work to govern and nurture the multitude.

The way of governing the multitude lies solely in checking evil and promoting good; by chastising evil and encouraging good, one accords with Heaven's decree and brings peace to all living beings.

Zhouyi ZhuJudgment

Without great pervasive openness, how could one attain Possession in Great Measure? If there is Possession in Great Measure, there must be supreme success.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Dwelling in honor through yielding, occupying the center through greatness, the structure has no second yin line to divide its correspondence; above and below respond to it, and there is nothing it does not embrace: such is the meaning of Possession in Great Measure.

When virtue responds to Heaven, actions do not miss the proper season. Firm strength causes no stagnation; radiant civilization avoids transgression. Responding to Heaven brings greatness; acting in accord with the seasons meets no opposition. Therefore it has 'supreme success.'

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Possession in Great Measure is the image of all-embracing containment. Therefore one curbs evil and promotes good to bring the nature of things to completion; one accords with Heaven's auspicious decree by complying with the destiny of all things.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Sub-commentary says: The yielding dwells in the honored position, and the yang lines all respond to it; it is greatly capable of possessing, hence it is called Possession in Great Measure.

Being able to possess in great measure, all things attain great pervasive success; hence it is said: 'Possession in Great Measure: supreme success.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

The Sub-commentary says: This explains why this hexagram is called Possession in Great Measure.

'Great balance' means Six in the Fifth Place occupies greatness with centrality: the yielding dwelling in the honored position constitutes its greatness; occupying the inner core of the upper trigram constitutes its centrality. 'Its virtue is firm and strong...

therefore supreme success': The Sub-commentary says: This explains the meaning of 'supreme success.' 'Firm and strong' refers to Qian; 'civilized and bright' refers to Li.

'Responding to Heaven and acting in accord with the seasons': Master Chu and Master Zhuang say: 'Six in the Fifth Place responds to Nine in the Second Place of Qian.' It also forms the body together with the Fifth, hence it says 'responding to Heaven.'

When virtue responds to Heaven, actions do not miss their season; having no conflict with the times, myriad things all achieve pervasive success, hence 'therefore supreme success.' Regarding the note 'Firm strength causes no stagnation...

therefore supreme success': The Sub-commentary says: 'Firm strength causes no stagnation' means when firm and strong, things are not blocked or obstructed. 'Radiant civilization avoids transgression' means when civilized and bright, one shines clearly without offending others.

'Responding to Heaven brings greatness' means being able to respond to Heaven brings prosperity and greatness. 'Acting in accord with the seasons meets no opposition' means acting in season, nothing opposes.

Possessing these various qualities, it achieves great openness and 'supreme success.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Sub-commentary says: 'The gentleman curbs evil and promotes good': Possession in Great Measure carries the meaning of containment.

Thus the gentleman models himself on it, containing and concealing evil while praising and promoting good, reverently complying with the heavenly virtue, and enhancing the nature and destiny of all things—this embodies compliance and magnanimous containment.

Instead of saying heaven is beneath fire, it says 'fire is in heaven' because heaven's nature is exalted and bright, and fire's nature blazes upward; fire, being an illuminating element, dwells high in heaven, producing supreme brilliance that shines everywhere.

This also signifies all-embracing containment and the principle of promoting good.
