Judgment

Sun intimates that (under the conditions which it denotes) there will be some little attainment and progress. There will be advantage in movement onward in whatever direction. It will be advantageous (also) to see the great man.

Tuan commentary

The double Sun shows how, in accordance with it, (governmental) orders are reiterated.

(We see that) the strong (fifth line) has penetrated into the central and correct place, and the will (of its subject) is being carried into effect; (we see also) the weak (first and fourth lines) both obedient to the strong lines (above them).

It is hence said, ‘There will be some little attainment and progress. There will be advantage in movement onward in whatever direction. It will be advantageous also to see the great man.’

Great Image

(Two trigrams representing) wind, following each other, form Sun. The superior man, in accordance with this, reiterates his orders, and secures the practice of his affairs.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Xun means entering. One yin lies hidden beneath two yang lines; its nature is able to be gentle and enter. Its image is wind, which also takes the meaning of entering.

Yin serves as the ruler, hence its divination is small success; because yin follows yang, it is also beneficial to have somewhere to go. Yet one must know whom to follow in order to attain correctness; hence it also says, 'It is beneficial to see the great man.'

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explaining the hexagram's meaning: Xun is compliant and entering, bound to reach down to the bottom; this is the image of issuing orders. Doubled Xun therefore means reiterating commands.

Explaining the hexagram's judgment by means of the hexagram structure: 'The firm conforms to the central and correct and its will is carried out' refers to Nine in the Fifth Place. 'The yielding' refers to the initial and fourth lines.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

'Sui' (following) has the meaning of continuing in succession.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

The Order of the Hexagrams says: 'A wanderer has nowhere to be taken in; hence Xun is received. Xun means entering.' When a traveler has few close associates, unless he is gentle and compliant, how can he find acceptance?

If one can be gentle and compliant, even amidst the hardships of wandering, wherever one goes, how can one fail to enter? This is why The Gentle succeeds The Wanderer. As a hexagram, one yin is below two yang lines; being gentle and compliant toward yang is why it is Xun.

The talent of the hexagram allows for small success, benefit in having somewhere to go, and benefit in seeing the great man.

Both Xun and Dui are firm, central, and correct, and the meanings of gentleness and joyousness are also similar; yet Dui has penetration while Xun has only small success because Dui is the working of yang while Xun is the working of yin.

In Dui, the yielding is on the outside, which is the employment of yielding; in Xun, the yielding is on the inside, which is the nature of yielding. This is why Xun's penetration is small.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Doubled Xun means both upper and lower are Xun. The one above complies with the Dao to issue commands; the one below reveres the commands and complies with them. Both upper and lower are compliant: this is the image of doubled Xun.

Furthermore, 'double' carries the meaning of reiteration. The noble person embodies the meaning of doubled Xun to reiterate his orders; 'shen' means to repeat, which is to be earnest and painstaking.

Speaking in terms of the hexagram's talent: yang and firm dwelling in Xun and attaining the Central Position and correctness means being gentle and compliant toward the Dao of centrality and correctness.

The nature of yang ascends; its will lies in carrying out the Dao of centrality and correctness upward. Moreover, the yielding lines above and below both comply with the firm. With talent such as this, although there is yielding within, there can still be small success.

The Dao of gentle compliance can enter anywhere, hence 'it is beneficial to have somewhere to go.'

Gentle compliance, though a good path, requires knowing whom to follow; if one can be gentle and compliant toward a great man of yang firmness, centrality, and correctness, it is beneficial, hence 'it is beneficial to see the great man.'

Like the fifth and the second, which are yang, firm, central, and correct, they are great men. If gentle compliance is not directed toward a great man, it may not avoid being an error.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Two winds doubled together make following wind; following has the meaning of continuing in succession. The noble person observes the image of doubled Xun continuing in compliance, and thereby reiterates his commands and carries out his affairs.

Following and doubling mean that both above and below comply: the one above accords with those below to issue them, and those below accord with the one above to follow them. Upper and lower both complying is the meaning of doubled Xun.

When commands and governance accord with principle, they match the hearts of the people, and the people comply.

Zhouyi ZhuJudgment

Taking gentleness entirely as virtue is why there is small success. When upper and lower are both gentle, not disobeying orders, commands can then be carried out.

Therefore, at the time of reiterating commands and carrying out affairs, both upper and lower cannot fail to be gentle. Acting with gentleness and deference, nothing resists. When the great man uses it, the Dao flourishes all the more.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Commands can then be carried out. There has never been an instance where commands were carried out without gentleness. Being firm yet able to use gentleness and dwelling in the Central Position and correctness, one is supported by all things.

It is clear that there is no disobedience, hence small success is obtained.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Correct Meaning states: 'Xun' is the designation for humble compliance. The Shuo Gua says: 'Xun means entering.' Because Xun is the hexagram symbolizing wind, and wind blows without failing to enter everywhere, it takes 'entering' as its gloss.

If applied to human affairs, one who can humble and gentle himself will find nowhere that does not accommodate him. The meaning of Xun takes humble compliance as its substance and accommodative entering as its function; hence it receives the name Xun.

When upper and lower are both gentle without disobedience, the sovereign sings and the ministers join in harmony, and the instructions and commands can then be executed; therefore, in this hexagram of doubled Xun, the principle of reiterating commands is illuminated.

Although upper and lower are both gentle and commands can be executed, if one solely employs humble gentleness, what penetrates is not great; hence it says, 'small success.'

The Correct Meaning states: Acting with gentleness and deference, nothing disobeys or resists; hence it says, 'it is beneficial to have somewhere to go.'

The Correct Meaning states: Whoever can use gentleness will find that nothing is without benefit wherever he goes; yet when the great man uses gentleness, his Dao flourishes all the more, hence it says, 'it is beneficial to see the great man,' illuminating that both above and below must use gentleness.

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

The Correct Meaning states: This hexagram takes humble gentleness as its name and reiterating commands as its meaning. Therefore, looking at the two trigrams upper and lower both being Xun, it clarifies that commands may be reiterated.

The upper Xun can reach down to the lower, and the lower Xun can support the upper; when both above and below are gentle, orders can be carried out; hence it says, 'Doubled Xun reiterates commands.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'The firm conforms to the central and correct and its will is carried out': although upper and lower are both gentle, if the command cannot be followed, things will not support it.

Therefore, drawing on the second and fifth lines being firm yet able to be gentle without losing their center, their intentions are carried out and their commands are reiterated. 'The yielding all comply with the firm.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'The yielding all comply with the firm': although the firm conforms to centrality and correctness, if the yielding does not comply with the firm, where could commands be reiterated?

Thus, drawing on the initial and fourth lines residing at the base of each trigram, the yielding lines all comply with the firm without disobedience, so that teachings and commands are reiterated, fulfilling the meaning from 'small success' downward.

Commentary note 'clarifies that there is no disobedience' through 'small success is obtained': The Correct Meaning states: examining the Tuan commentary which cites 'small success, beneficial to have somewhere to go, beneficial to see the great man' to conclude, the idea that the yielding all comply with the firm does not merely explain the two words 'small success'; yet the commentary uniquely says, 'clarifies that there is no disobedience, hence small success is obtained.'

Mr.

Chu said: 'When one presents the acceptable and rejects the unacceptable, the Dao is magnified; the yielding merely complying with the firm is not the way of great penetration, which is why King Wen appended the words "small success," and Confucius provided the explanation "all comply."'

Examining Wang's commentary on the substance of the upper and lower trigrams, both speak of Xun; yielding not disobeying the firm is precisely the meaning of Xun, hence we know that 'all comply' broadly explains all the phrases.

The Correct Meaning states: 'Hence small success' and what follows conclude the explanation of the canon text.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'Wind following wind: The Gentle.' Two winds following each other is why it says 'wind following wind.' When winds follow one another, nothing fails to comply, hence 'wind following wind: The Gentle.'

'The noble person reiterates his commands and carries out his affairs': when winds arrive in succession, it is not the very first order; therefore the noble person takes instruction from this to reiterate commands and carry out affairs.
