Judgment

In Sin we see a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people) presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews.

Tuan commentary

Žin denotes advancing.

(In Žin we have) the bright (sun) appearing above the earth; (the symbol of) docile submission cleaving to that of the Great brightness; and the weak line advanced and moving above:—all these things give us the idea of ‘a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people), presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews.’

Great Image

(The trigram representing) the earth and that for the bright (sun) coming forth above it form Žin. The superior man, according to this, gives himself to make more brilliant his bright virtue.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Jin means advancing. The Marquis of Kang is a marquis who brings peace to the state. Bestowed with numerous horses and received three times in a single day signifies receiving vast bounties and being visibly treated with intimate honor.

As a Gua, Li is above and Kun is below, having the image of the sun rising above the Earth, yielding and clinging to the virtue of great brightness. Furthermore, its change comes from Guan, where the yielding Six in the Fourth Place advances and moves upward to reach the fifth.

If a diviner possesses these three attributes, he shall likewise enjoy such favor. Explaining the name and meaning of the Gua.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Shàng in 'shàng xíng' (advancing upward) is pronounced shí-zhǎng fan. Explaining the Gua's judgment through its images, virtues, and line changes.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Zhāo means making it bright and clear.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Jin follows in the Sequence of the Gua: Things cannot remain strong forever, hence it is received by Jin. Jin means advancing. Nothing in existence remains strong and stops forever; once flourishing and strong, it must advance. This is why Jin succeeds Great Strength.

As a Gua, Li is above Kun, meaning brightness emerges above the Earth. As the sun emerges from the earth and ascends, it becomes ever brighter; hence it is Jin. Jin carries the meaning of advancing into vast brilliance and greatness.

Generally, when things gradually flourish, it is called advancing; hence the Tuan says: 'Jin means advancing.' Some hexagrams possess the four virtues while others do not, each according to what is appropriate.

Outside of Qian and Kun, those that mention 'supreme success' originally possess it; those that mention 'favorable to persevere' lack it in part and need it to achieve merit. Those that differ include Ge and Jian, as seen in each Gua.

Jin is flourishing and has no need to mention virtues; because Jin's brightness is so abundant, it needs not speak of success. Complying with great brightness, there is no need to caution about correctness.

Jin is a time of advancing into flourishing; great brightness is above, and the lower trigram complies and attaches below—the image of feudal lords serving the king. Therefore it is the Marquis of Kang. The Marquis of Kang is a marquis who governs in peace.

When great brightness is above, one who shares this virtue in compliant attachment is a marquis of peace and order; hence he receives numerous bestowed horses. Chariots and horses are heavy bounties; fán-shù means vast and numerous.

Not only are the gifts generous, but he is also treated with intimate courtesy, being granted audience three times within a single day, expressing the utmost favor of reception.

In the time of advancing into flourishing, the superior is bright and the subordinate is compliant; ruler and minister find mutual accord.

For the one above, it means advancing in brightness and flourishing; for the minister, it means ascending to high prominence and receiving glorious favor. The Tuan says: Jin means advancing.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Jin means advancing: brightness advances and flourishes. As brightness emerges from the Earth, it increasingly advances and flourishes, hence it is Jin.

The reason it is not simply called 'advancing' (jìn) is that ordinary advancing merely means moving forward and cannot encompass the meaning of bright flourishing. Brightness emerging above the Earth means Li is above Kun.

Kun clings to Li, using compliance to cling to great brightness—the minister of compliant virtue attaches above to the ruler of great brightness.

'The yielding advances and moves upward': in any Gua where Li is above, when a yielding line occupies the ruler's position, it is often said that 'the yielding advances and moves upward,' as in Shi He, Kui, and Ding.

Six in the Fifth Place occupies the ruler's throne with yielding; being bright and compliantly clinging, it embodies the meaning of treating subordinates with favor and intimate reception.

Therefore it says: 'The Marquis of Kang is bestowed with numerous horses and received three times in a day.'

A ruler of great brightness brings peace to the world; a feudal lord who compliantly attaches to the Son of Heaven's bright virtue is a marquis who brings peace to the people and the state, hence called the Marquis of Kang.

For this reason he enjoys bounties and receives intimate courtesy, being granted audience three times in a single day by the Son of Heaven.

It does not say 'dukes and ministers' but 'marquis' because the Son of Heaven governs above, while feudal lords govern below; dwelling below and compliantly attaching to the ruler of great brightness is the image of a feudal lord.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Zhāo means illuminating. The commentary says: 'To illuminate virtue and block transgression is to make clear its measure.' The gentleman observes the image of brightness rising above the Earth and growing ever more luminous, thereby illuminating his own bright virtue.

Ridding himself of delusions and extending knowledge illuminates bright virtue within oneself; making bright virtue shine throughout the world illuminates bright virtue without. Because making bright virtue shine begins with oneself, it says 'illuminates of oneself.'

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Whenever 'moving upward' is spoken of, it is because it resides in an honored position. Kang is an appellation of excellence. Manifesting brightness through compliance is the way of a minister.

'The yielding advances and moves upward,' which is what all things support; hence he receives numerous bestowed horses. Receiving robes through litigation results in 'having them stripped thrice before morning ends.'

Advancing with yielding to receive favor results in 'being received three times in a single day.'

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Manifesting brightness through compliance is the way to reveal oneself.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Correct Meaning says: Jin is the name of the Gua. The meaning of Jin is advancing and growing. This Gua illuminates the advancement and promotion of ministers, hence it is called Jin. Kang is an appellation of excellence. 'Marquis' refers to the promoted minister.

Since the minister advances with yielding, the Son of Heaven praises him, bestowing carriages and horses in vast abundance; hence it says 'the Marquis of Kang is bestowed with numerous horses.'

'Received three times in a single day' means that not only does he receive bountiful gifts, but he is also favored with frequent intimacy, being granted audience three times within one day.

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From 'The Tuan says: Jin means advancing' to 'advances and moves upward.' The Correct Meaning says: 'Jin means advancing' explains the ancient term with contemporary wording.

The ancient character jin carried the meaning of advancing and growing; fearing later generations would not understand, it is explained with jìn (advance). 'Brightness emerges above the Earth' explains the name Jin from the two constituent trigrams.

Li is above and Kun is below, hence 'brightness emerges above the Earth.' Once brightness rises from the earth, it gradually advances and grows, which constitutes Jin.

'Compliant and clinging to great brightness; the yielding advances and moves upward' explains 'the Marquis of Kang is bestowed with horses' and what follows, using the meaning of the two trigrams and the line Six in the Fifth Place.

Kun is compliance; Li is clinging, and also brightness.

Kun is able to follow compliantly and cling to great brightness; Six in the Fifth Place advances with yielding and ascends to the honored position, embodying the minister's beautiful way of manifesting brightness through compliance.

'The yielding advances and moves upward' is favored by the sovereign above, hence he receives rich gifts and is treated with intimate affection. From 'Therefore the Marquis of Kang' to 'received three times.'

The Correct Meaning says: After the explanation, it quotes the Classic to conclude the meaning of the ruler's favor.

Regarding the note 'Kang is an appellation of excellence' to 'received three times in a single day': The Correct Meaning says: Citing this contrast shows that while Song (Litigation) speaks of 'before morning ends' and Jin speaks of 'within a single day,' neither exceeds a day, illustrating how swiftly demotion and promotion occur, thereby demonstrating warning and encouragement.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

From 'The Xiang says' to 'illuminates his bright virtue.' The Correct Meaning says: 'Illuminates of oneself his bright virtue': zhāo also means to make bright, referring to manifesting one's own virtue.

Master Zhou and others read it as zhào (to shine upon), taking it as shining upon one's own person. Laozi says: 'He who knows himself is enlightened.' Using brightness to examine oneself is bright virtue.

Checking Wang Bi's note here: 'Manifesting brightness through compliance is the way to reveal oneself.' Furthermore, this Gua is the exact opposite of Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light).

The Xiang Commentary of Ming Yi says: 'The gentleman oversees the multitudes by using darkness yet remaining bright.'

Wang Bi notes there: 'Overseeing the multitudes with overt brightness obscures and brings deceit to the common people'; 'concealing brightness within, one attains true brightness.'

According to these two notes, Wang Bi's commentary clearly takes this as manifesting one's own bright virtue. The character zhāo should be read as zhāo (zhī-yáo fan). Master Zhou and others read it as zhào (zhī-zhào fan), which does not accord with the intent of the commentary.
