The Family in the Sequence of the Guas: Yi means wounded; one who is wounded outside must return home, hence it is followed by The Family. Suffering injury and exhaustion outside inevitably leads one to turn back inward; this is why The Family follows Darkening of the Light.
The Family represents the way within the household: the affection between father and son, the righteousness between husband and wife, the order between elder and younger, the honorable and the humble—rectifying human relationships and deepening love and righteousness are the way of The Family.
In this Gua, Xun is outside and Li is inside, signifying wind emerging from fire. When fire blazes, wind is generated; the wind is born of the fire, emerging from within. Emerging from within is the image of extending from the family to the outside.
The second and fifth lines rectify the positions of woman and man inside and outside, constituting the way of The Family. Being bright within and gentle without is the way to govern the household.
If a person embodies these qualities within their own person, they can apply them to their family; what is practiced in the family can be applied to the state, extending to the governance of all under heaven.
The way to govern all under heaven is none other than the way to govern the family, merely extended and practiced outward. Hence the image of emerging from within is taken as the meaning of The Family.
The book of Wenzhongzi takes "clarifying the interior and regulating the exterior" as its meaning, which has been praised through the ages, yet this was not the intention of the hexagram's imagery.
The phrase "regulated in Xun" means that all things are made clean and orderly in the direction of Xun, not that Xun itself carries the inherent meaning of regulating—just as "warring in Qian" does not mean Qian has an inherent meaning of warfare.
In the way of The Family, benefit lies in the woman's correctness; when the woman is correct, the family's way is correct. Husband and wife each fulfilling their role rectifies the family way.
Saying solely "it is beneficial for a woman to be steadfast" means that the husband's correctness is rectifying oneself, while the woman's correctness is rectifying the entire family. When the woman is correct, the man's correctness is already known.
