Judgment

H&ng indicates successful progress and no error (in what it denotes). But the advantage will come from being firm and correct; and movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous.

Tuan commentary

Hăng denotes long continuance.

The strong (trigram) is above, and the weak one below; (they are the symbols of) thunder and wind, which are in mutual communication; (they have the qualities of) docility and motive force; their strong and weak (lines) all respond, each to the other:—these things are all found in Hăng.

(When it is said that) ‘Hăng indicates successful progress and no error (in what it denotes); but the advantage will come from being firm and correct,’ this indicates that there must be long continuance in its way of operation.

The way of heaven and earth is to be long continued in their operation without stopping. (When it is said that) ‘Movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous,’ this implies that when (the moving power) is spent, it will begin again.

The sun and moon, realising in themselves (the course of Heaven), can perpetuate their shining. The four seasons, by their changing and transforming, can perpetuate their production (of things).

The sages persevere long in their course, and all under the sky are transformed and perfect. When we look at what they continue doing long, the natural tendencies of heaven, earth, and all things can be seen.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) thunder and that for wind form Hăng. The superior man, in accordance with this, stands firm, and does not change his method (of operation).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

The name and meaning of the hexagram are explained through the hexagram structure, hexagram images, and hexagram virtues.

Some explain the meaning of the firm being above and the yielding below through hexagram transformation, saying that Duration (alt: Héng) comes from Abundance, with the firm ascending to occupy the second place and the yielding descending to occupy the initial place; this is also plausible.

Duration can certainly achieve success and be free of blame, yet it must be advantageous to be steadfast so that one endures in one's proper way; if not correct, enduring is not the proper way. The Way of Heaven and Earth endures long simply because it is correct.

Enduring in its way is the end; it is advantageous to have somewhere to go is the beginning. Movement and stillness generate each other in a cyclical principle, yet stillness must serve as the master. This speaks to the utmost of the Way of duration.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Duration. The Sequence of the Hexagrams says: The way of husband and wife cannot fail to endure; hence it is received with Duration. Duration means long-lasting.

Influence (Wooing) is the way of husband and wife, and husband and wife remain unchanged throughout life; hence Influence (Wooing) is followed by Duration.

In Influence (Wooing), the youngest son is below the youngest daughter, placing the man beneath the woman, which conveys the meaning of mutual influence between male and female.

In Duration, the eldest son is above the eldest daughter, placing the man in honor and the woman in humility, which is the constant way of husband and wife in the household.

In terms of mutual feeling, youth brings intimacy; in terms of hierarchical order, seniority demands solemn propriety. Thus Dui and Gen form Influence (Wooing), while Zhen and Xun form Duration.

The man being above the woman, the man moving on the outside and the woman complying on the inside—this is the constancy of human principle, hence it is Duration.

Moreover, the firm above and the yielding below, thunder and wind joining together, gentle yielding and moving, the firm and the yielding all corresponding—these are all meanings of Duration. Duration. Success. No blame. Advantageous to be steadfast.

It is advantageous to have somewhere to go. Duration means constancy and longevity. The way of duration can bring success; only when enduring and able to succeed is there no blame. Enduring without being able to succeed is not a way that should be endured, and blame will follow.

For instance, when a noble person endures in goodness, that is a way worth enduring; when a petty person endures in evil, he loses the way worth enduring.

The reason duration can achieve success is due to steadfastness and correctness; hence it says 'advantageous to be steadfast.' What is called duration refers to a way that can endure, not holding rigidly to one corner without knowing how to adapt.

Hence it is advantageous to have somewhere to go; only by having somewhere to go can one endure. Being fixed admits of no constancy. Moreover, in the constant and enduring way, where would one go that is not advantageous?

The Commentary on the Judgment says: Duration means long-lasting. Duration carries the meaning of enduring long. The hexagram talent possesses these four qualities, fulfilling the meaning of Duration.

'The firm above and the yielding below' means that the initial line of Qian ascends to occupy the fourth, and the initial line of Kun descends to occupy the initial, with the firm line ascending and the yielding line descending.

When the two lines exchange places, Zhen and Xun are formed; Zhen above and Xun below also represents the firm above and the yielding below. The firm occupying the upper position and the yielding dwelling in the lower position is the enduring Way.

'Thunder and wind join together': when thunder rouses, the wind rises; the two rely on each other and mutually assist their momentum, hence they are said to join together, which is their regular state.

'Gentle yielding and moving': below is Xun, representing compliance; above is Zhen, representing movement—this constitutes moving with compliance.

The creations and transformations of Heaven and Earth endure endlessly simply because they move with compliance; moving with compliance is the way of duration. How could movement without compliance ever endure?

'The firm and the yielding all correspond': all the firm and yielding lines of the hexagram correspond with each other, and mutual correspondence between firm and yielding is the constant of principle.

These four are the Way of duration, and the reason why the hexagram is Duration. Duration. The way of duration can bring success without blame, but what is endured must attain its correctness; losing correctness makes it no longer a way worth enduring.

Therefore it says, 'enduring in its way'—its way being the correct way that can endure. Not enduring in one's virtue or enduring in what is incorrect will neither bring success nor avoid blame. That Heaven and Earth never cease is because they possess an enduring Way.

If humans can endure in the way that can endure, they harmonize with the principle of Heaven and Earth. In the principle of the world, nothing can endure without moving. Movement reaches an end and begins anew, which is why it endures without exhaustion.

Among all things produced by Heaven and Earth, even the solid mass of high mountains, none can remain unchanged. Therefore, duration does not mean being fixed in one state; if fixed, it cannot endure. Only adapting to the times constitutes the constant Way.

Hence it says 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go,' making this principle clear for fear that people might cling rigidly to constancy.

This speaks to the utmost of constant principle: the sun and moon are merely the refined qi of yin and yang; only by complying with the Way of Heaven in their comings, goings, waxings, and wanings can they shine long without ceasing, having attained Heaven and complied with heavenly principle.

The four seasons are merely the qi of yin and yang; in their cycling and transformation, generating and completing the myriad things, they also attain Heaven and therefore endure endlessly without ceasing.

The sage practices the enduring Way with constancy, and all under heaven is transformed to form good customs.

'Observing what they endure' means observing the enduring illumination of the sun and moon, the enduring completion of the four seasons, and the principle by which the sage's way can endure. Observing this, the true nature of Heaven, Earth, and all things can be seen.

The enduring Way of Heaven and Earth and the constant principles of all under heaven—who could know them except one who understands the Way?

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

The noble person observes the image of thunder and wind joining together to form Duration, thereby making virtue endure, standing firm in the great Central Position and the enduring Way, never altering one's direction and dwelling place.

Zhouyi ZhuJudgment

Enduring and succeeding serves to accomplish the three matters. As for the Way of duration, only with success is there 'no blame.' When duration succeeds and is free of blame, only then is it advantageous to be steadfast.

Each attaining what it endures and cultivating its constant way, ending only to begin again, proceeding without contradiction—hence 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go.'

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

The firm is honored and the yielding is humble, attaining their proper order. The eldest yang and the eldest yin are able to complete each other. Movement without contradiction. Not standing as an isolated pair. Duration.

When virtue and the Way endure, there is constant success, freedom from blame, and advantage in steadfastness. Having attained what allows it to endure, it never ceases. Attaining its constant way, ending only to begin anew, going forth without limit.

This says that each attains 'what it endures,' and thus all can endure long. The true nature of Heaven, Earth, and all things is seen in 'what they endure.'

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

The eldest yang and the eldest yin unite and join together; this is the way to endure long. Attaining what allows it to endure, it therefore 'does not alter.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

From 'Duration. Success' to 'Advantageous to be steadfast.' Correct meaning: Duration means long-lasting. In the enduring Way, what is valued is adaptation and free flow. One must adapt according to the times before one can endure long.

Being able to endure and flow freely brings 'no blame.' Only after duration achieves free flow and freedom from blame is it advantageous to practice correctness; hence it says: 'Duration. Success. No blame. Advantageous to be steadfast.'

Commenting on the note 'three matters': Master Chu says: 'The three matters refer to no blame, advantageous to be steadfast, and advantageous to have somewhere to go.'

Master Zhuang says: 'The three matters are: no blame is the first, advantage is the second, and steadfastness is the third.' Master Zhou says: 'The three matters are: first, success; second, no blame; third, advantageous to be steadfast.'

Wang Bi's note does not specify the items, so past scholars explained according to their own interpretations.

I venture to suggest that when the note says 'enduring and succeeding serves to accomplish the three matters,' it makes clear that this 'enduring success' is used to accomplish those three matters; undoubtedly the word 'success' lies outside the three matters.

Yet this note says: 'As for the Way of duration, only with success is there no blame. When duration succeeds and is free of blame, only then is it advantageous to be steadfast.'

Furthermore, the note on the Commentary on the Judgment says: 'When the Way attains what allows it to endure, there is constant success, freedom from blame, and advantage in steadfastness.'

These explanations all combine 'advantageous' and 'steadfast' into a single matter; dividing them into two would likely go against the note's intent.

Examining this note: 'As for the Way of duration, only with success is there no blame'—here 'enduring success' accomplishes 'no blame.'

It further says: 'When duration succeeds and is free of blame, only then is it advantageous to be steadfast'—here 'enduring success' accomplishes 'advantageous to be steadfast.'

The note below on 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go' says: 'Each attaining what it endures and cultivating its constant way, ending only to begin again, proceeding without contradiction; hence it is advantageous to have somewhere to go'—here 'enduring success' accomplishes 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go.'

Examining the text against the commentary, Master Chu's view is superior. Correct meaning: Attaining its constant way, where could one go that is not advantageous? Hence it says: 'It is advantageous to have somewhere to go.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From 'The Commentary on the Judgment says' to 'the yielding below.' Correct meaning: 'Duration means long-lasting' explains the hexagram name. The name Duration takes enduring long as its meaning.

'The firm above and the yielding below': having glossed Duration as long-lasting, it explains why the hexagram receives this name and why it can endure.

This explains Duration in terms of the two trigram bodies: Zhen is firm and Xun is yielding; Zhen as the firm and honored is above, and Xun as the yielding and humble is below, attaining their proper sequence, which constitutes Duration.

Commenting on the note 'the firm is honored and the yielding humble, attaining their proper order': Influence (Wooing) illuminates mutual resonance, so the yielding is above and the firm below, taking the mutual intercourse of the two qi.

Duration illuminates long endurance, so the firm is above and the yielding below, taking the proper order of honor and humility. 'Thunder and wind join together': this explains Duration through the two images.

Thunder and wind represent the mutual influence of yin and yang; the two qi join together, mutually assisting and completing each other, and thus can endure long.

Commenting on the note 'the eldest yang and eldest yin are able to complete each other': Zhen is the eldest son, hence called 'eldest yang.' Xun is the eldest daughter, hence called 'eldest yin.'

The Commentary on the Judgment says 'thunder and wind join together,' meaning thunder and wind assist and complete each other. Thus Master Chu says: 'Thunder draws upon wind to reach further; wind borrows thunder to increase its awe.'

Now saying 'the eldest yang and eldest yin can complete each other' is because Zhen is the eldest son and Xun is the eldest daughter, so they are named 'eldest yang and eldest yin'—a stylistic convention of composition.

Moreover, this hexagram illustrates the enduring way of husband and wife, so the two elders completing each other is like the principle of thunder and wind.

Correct meaning: This explains the name Duration through the meaning of the two trigrams: Zhen moves and Xun complies, with no contradiction or disobedience, which is why it can endure. 'The firm and the yielding all correspond': this explains Duration through the Six Lines.

In this hexagram, all six lines of firm and yielding harmonize and correspond with one another, with none left as an isolated pair; therefore it can endure long. Commenting on the note 'not standing as an isolated pair': pì means to match or pair.

Correct meaning: Having explained the name Duration through the four meanings, it brings up the hexagram name to conclude. It clarifies that the above four matters are all ways that can endure long, hence naming this hexagram 'Duration.'

Correct meaning: This explains the hexagram's virtue through its name, stating that the reason it achieves success, no blame, and advantage in steadfastness is solely because it attains its enduring way; hence it says 'enduring in its way.'

Correct meaning: In explaining 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go,' it first cites Heaven and Earth as an analogy, stating that Heaven and Earth attain their enduring Way and thus endure endlessly. Correct meaning: This concludes by citing the classic text.

When humans employ the enduring Way to harmonize with adaptation and free flow, ending only to begin again, proceeding boundlessly, they equal the ceaselessness of Heaven and Earth; this is why it is advantageous.

From 'The sun and moon attain heaven and can shine long' to 'all under heaven is transformed and completed.' Correct meaning: 'The sun and moon attain heaven and can shine long' broadly explains the meaning of Duration below.

The above spoke of the Way of Heaven and Earth enduring endlessly; thus, when the sun and moon attain heaven, they are likewise able to shine long.

'The four seasons change and transform and can complete long': the four seasons rotate and cold and heat transform each other, which is why they can preside over the completion of the myriad things for a long time.

'The sage endures in his way and all under heaven is transformed and completed': the sage adapts to the times and attains the enduring Way, thereby illuminating all under heaven and leading all things to follow transformation to completion.

Correct meaning: This summarizes the meaning of Duration.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

Correct meaning: Thunder and wind joining together forms Duration, as already explained in the Commentary on the Judgment. Correct meaning: The noble person establishes himself and attains the enduring Way, and therefore does not alter his direction. Direction is like the Way.
